STRIKE OUT THYROID CANCER is a fundraising effort benefiting Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. According to The James, this is the first fundraiser designed to specifically benefit thyroid cancer at the center. Since 2009, S.O.T.C. has raised more than $62,000 for The James.
The event was created by a group of friends as a way to support a loved one diagnosed with thyroid cancer and raise awareness for this deadly disease.
In May of 2010 S.O.T.C. presented The James with a $37,000 check to help fund Thyroid Cancer research.
In July of 2007, Jessica (Roby) Hoffman was on her way home from a family gathering when she began to have chest pain and began to feel faint. Her family rushed her to the hospital where she was examined. During a routine heart-scan, the doctors noticed a lump on her thyroid. Soon after, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
Painful surgery to remove her thyroid and radioactive iodine therapy immediately followed her diagnosis. Unfortunately, Jessica’s cancer did not go away. In the fall of 2008, Jessica had a second surgery to remove several lymph nodes in her neck, and she underwent radioactive iodine therapy again.
Today, Jessica is living life to the fullest. She was married in August 2010 and looks forward to the future. She is still fighting her battle with cancer and hopes to soon be cancer free.
Jessica is thankful for the wonderful group of family, friends and doctors at The James who have supported her throughout her treatment. With their help she is able to fight this disease and continue her mission to raise awareness for thyroid cancer prevention and research.
